6.3 U.S. History: Pearl Harbor (Due 2/19)

 Tora! Tora! Tora!

Tora! Tora! Tora! was the command words that were used by the Japanese to give orders that would lead to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. "Tora" translates to Tiger in Japanese. Prior to this attack, the United States tried to stay out of the fight that was currently raging on in the world. This one attack would bring the nation to war with not only Japan but Germany too. Admiral Yamamoto said this about the attack on which he designed, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”

Below are some videos to help you explore the history behind this attack. Watch these videos and use any source material to help you answer the questions below. Also below, is a link to the New York Public Library that showed the news response to the attack.

  1. Why did Japan choose Pearl Harbor to attack? The news was able to show real footage of the attack. Outcomes of this attack were that ships, planes, and lives were destroyed and lost. John Anderson helped me understand that every single person was effected differently by this attack. Roosevelt declared wars that were a big part of our history.

  2. 1. As an Japanese - American, this topic hits home for me. Both of my parents moved here in their early twenties so I have a sense of Japanese pride while still being proud of being an American. So, my question would be, was there something or someone that provoked the Japanese to attack? If so, what was it?
    2. I think the New Media reported it the best that they could. Of course there will always be some form of propaganda or a biased opinion but they had as much information as they could get at the time.
    3. Some outcomes of this attack were: lost lives, strong nationalism, a conflicting sense of identity for Japanese - Americans, hate, and war.
    4. John Anderson helped put into perspective the sense of helplessness that the many military personnel had to face when trying to save as many men after the attack. I can’t imagine the amount of trauma that they have to face everyday.
    5. Roosevelt had the role of, leading the nation into war and making choices of who/what to attack.

  4. Why was pearl harbor the focus of the attack? Why not the mainland? The Media reported the attack as sudden and not expected. 2,403 lives were lost and 1,178 people were wounded. John Anderson and other military personnel that survived the attack had to had much trauma losing their friends. Roosevelt made big decisions that couldve changed our lives today.

    1. That is a great question. Why didnt they attack the mainland? Maybe the Harbor had more resources they could hurt. I argee that Roosevelt's decisions effect us today.

  5. Why was Pearl Harbor the target of the Japanese? The news and media reported the bombing and outcomes included destroyed planes, ships and many lives were lost. John Anderson added a sense of perspective to the reader as a survivor of the attack. He spoke about the hardships he faced including the hardship of losing friends. I think Roosevelt could have made some better decision making to ensure the safety of his country.

  6. I want to know why the Japanese wanted to get the US involved in the war. The news reported the attack on the front page by saying that Japan was declaring war on the US and England and even on democracy. They also let the American public know that Congress and the President would be immediately meeting. Some of the outcomes of the attack were that the US became involved in the war and wanted to defeat the Japanese. Some of the takeaways from John Anderson’s explaining what happened to him are that it sounds like the US was expecting the Japanese to attack at some point, that the people in charge were willing to listen to people like John Anderson about what to do, that people were willing to put themselves in danger to save others, and that people who were there are still affected my it. I think Roosevelt played an important role. He would have led the nation in the time of war, convinced people that the war was necessary and worked with the Congress and his cabinet to make sure the US won.

  7. I want to know why they chose that harbor and not another one on the coast of the mainland. The News Media reported the attack by saying that how they had been bombed with many casualties and that Japan was declaring war on the U.S. The out comes of this attack is that ships, people, planes and there base was destroyed. John Anderson explained being there when Pear Harbor was bombed. He shows the perspective of the people who were there fighting and how everyone had a different perspective. Roosevelt had to be a strong leader during this time. He had to convince everyone how we should fight and end the war.

    1. Hi Lorien, I think that they chose the harbor because it attacks the military base the best.

  8. I wanted to know why Japanese wanted to invade the US. The News media reported the destructive results from the bombing. The bombing caused destructions of military base, jets and ships and killed many people's life. John Anderson showed how people are affected by this decision. They all seem to know by the point of the attack that the Japanese will probably do something to the US. It is a tragedy of small everyday figures that appeals emotionally in history after hundred years. Roosevelt helped the US to decide on entering the war and how to end it with military force.
