  6. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, was established by the United States, Canada, and Western European Nations in 1949 after WWII to help keep freedom and peace in Europe. The United States’ role is to work with the other countries and to help defend them if they are attacked by someone outside of NATO. The main objective of NATO during the Cold War was to protect Europe from the Soviet Union and the main goal currently in a post-Cold War era is to continue to protect democracy. NATO is still relevant in the world today because it provides a strong collection of countries that would stand up for the others, and it might stop countries not in NATO from attacking those that are.
