7.4 U.S. History: Ceser Chavez (Due 3/26)

 


Cesar Chavez

With it being Cesar Chavez Day coming up, March 31st, now would be a good time to look at the accomplishments that Cesar Chavez was able to achieve and the struggles that many Americans had to deal with post World War II. The fight on the war front was over, and now many soldiers were coming home to hardships that they themselves had to overcome. Looking at one man, Cesar Chavez was able to bring about change in California and working unions. He was able to fight for equal rights for many immigrants who were coming to the United States. Seeing his accomplishments can help students understand the world they live in and how others' struggles can be impactful for future generations.

    -An American Civil rights activist and labor leader born in Yuma 2.Arizona on March 31 1927
    What union did he help create?
    - He helped create the national farm workers association which became the united farm workers of America.
    3.How was Cesar Chavez able to organize the labor union that he created?
    - He began to recruit agricultural workers for a labor union that would demand better working conditions and higher pay.
    4.How was Fred Ross inspirational to Cesar Chavez?
    - Cesar Chavez was inspired by Fred Ross because of his works in the Community Service Organization and his efforts to help out Mexicans
    5.His first boycott was to boycott which food crop?
    - Caesar Chavez’s first food crop boycott was on the California fruit because of the poor working conditions and pay for the agricultural laborers that were forced to deal with it.
    6.What are some of the issues Cesar Chavez fights for during his life?
    - Some of the issues Cesar Chavez fought for were unfair pair gaps and working conditions for his fellow farm laborers and agricultural workers.
    7.How was Mexican immigration impactful on the agricultural economy in California?
    - Mexicans immigrated to California and went on strike for better working conditions and pay for the agricultural economy which eventually proved successful.

    -Cesar Chavez’s movement & relationship with the agricultural economy allowed farmers and workers in that genre to gain their own power from the government and become more independent.
    9.What are some ways Cesar Chavez was able to be successful in organizing labor unions?
    - Cesar Chavez was a successful organizer in labor unions because many attempts similar to his failed in countless different countries but Cesar prevailed in organizing unions.
    10.What were some strategies that were used during the strikes?
    - Cesar gave his workers identities & began printing weekly newspapers. Some other strategies included making a flag and making fun of the people who opposed them.
    11.Were the protests peaceful or were they violent?
    - The protests were non violent for example one of the protests was called the hunger strike, they protested by not eating food for a certain period of time.
    12.Did Cesar Chavez accomplish the goals that he fought for, or is there still a lot more work to be done? Why or Why not.
    Cesar Chavez fought for humane working conditions of farmers and good pay. He also founded the United Farm Workers Union (UFW). Cesar stated in one of the interviews that he wants to get rid of pesticides during his lifetime and although he passed away his Union organization still fights for the problems that Cesar fought against.

    2. The union he created is United Farm Workers of America.
    3. He was able to organize by going out to the fields and talking to the workers.
    4. Fred Ross was inspirational to Cesar Chavez because he was a man who taught Cesar to be an organizer, how to create power and get people excited for a useful purpose.
    5. His first boycott was to boycott table grapes.
    6. Cesar fought for increased pay and working condition and the right to unionize, protection, social justice, use of pesticides.
    7. Mexican Immigration was impactful because the owners of the farms were able to use Mexican immigrants for cheap labor.
    8. Cesar Chavez's movement and his relationship to the agricultural economy change the post-World War II economy for California by causing the farm owners to pay attention to the workers. He impacted the economy by the grape boycott.
    9. Some ways Chavez was able to be successful in organizing labor unions were by convincing people that they had value. He was a great leader and convinced people that what they were doing was important. They created a satire theater.
    10. Some strategies that were used during the strikes were that the workers walked off the fields, became better organized, had a strong leader, and just did not give in. There was a march and the workers were able to get support from other unions and eventually politicians and the public. Chavez also went on a hunger strike that got a lot of attention around the world.
    11.The protests were mostly peaceful.
    12. He accomplished some goals, but there is still a lot more work to be done. He was able to eliminate some pesticides but others still exist. He was able to increase pay and working conditions. Also, he was able to get people to care about the farm workers. Many people still aren’t being treated equally and with dignity.

    9. Some ways Cesar Chavez was able to be successful in organizing labor unions was telling people that they could make in impact. That they could help so many people.
    10. Some strategies that were used during the strikes was marches, going to field and getting workers to walk off the fields, and having a theater that made fun of the people against them.
    11. The protest under Cesar were peaceful. When there were some violent protests Cesar went on a hunger strike.
    12. Cesar accomplished some of the goals he fought for but not all of them. He got better wages for workers and better working conditions. There are still many pesticides that have not been eliminated. His organization still works to fix these problems.

    -Fred Ross helped Cesar become a community organizer and mentored Cesar through the years.

    -Caesar and his group boycotted table grapes.

    -Cesar had to deal with violence that broke out, fasting and becoming physically weak,and boycotting the california grapes.

    -The farmer workers were able to get away with paying the Mexicans less and giving them poor living conditions.

    - After he got back with the navy he had to return back to the farm work that he didn’t want to go back to.

    -By organizing rallies, marches, fasts he was able to lead and persuade the government to listen to what he had to say.

    -Cesar tried to use non violent tactics to his strikes.

    Some of them were peaceful and some got out of hand and led to violence.
    Did Cesar Chavez accomplish the goals that he fought for, or is there still a lot more work to be done? Why or Why not. - I think that Cesar Chavez did everything he needed to do. He accomplished what he wanted to accomplish.

    9.Cesar Chavez was successful because of his other failed attempts in other countries and his perseverance to continue trying in organizing unions.
    10.Some strategies that were used during the strikes was Cesar printing weekly newspapers and also he made fun of people who thought bad or opposed them and did not let it impact his work.

    12.Cesar Chavez did so much for the unions and for many workers in California, but there is much more work to be done. Chavez increased pay and improved working conditions and gave people lives. All of his organizations today are still working to continue Chavez’s work.

    I think that Cesar Chavez accomplished his goals. The union he created are still working today. He definitely changed the life of farmers.
