  1. The US and the USSR were the two strongest nations in the world post WWII. Their influence on europe was very high. Also the US and the USSR have been developing nuclear weapons. Nuclear testing for the US has taken place in Nevada and has tested thousands of nuclear bombs. The US have used their nuclear weapons on Japan during WWII and attacked Hiroshima and nagasaki. The USSR has been testing their weapons in Kazakhstan. The USSR has not fired their weapons on any country. During the events of the cold war some threats about firing nuclear bombs have been said and have been prepared. Yet all threats eventually backed down and the world didn’t go into another world war. The Russians and the United States still are some of the biggests superpowers in the world today, and still in control of nuclear weapons but so far peace has been carried out that the world won’t fall into darkness again.

  2. McCarthyism affected the way the Cold War was handled between the United States and the Soviet Union by increasing feelings of anti-communism. McCarthy was a senator who was an anti-communist like many Americans after WW2. McCarthy began to accuse of people of being Communists and communist supporters. People lost their jobs and their friends by being accused. McCarthy didn’t give any evidence with the accusations. He blamed the highest levels of the government including the Democratic party of either being communists or allowing communism to spread; he even claimed that up to 205 Communists were in the State Department. Other people also begin to falsely claim people were Communists. The attacks were known as McCarthyism. Because of McCarthyism people had to take oats of loyalty, were afraid to speak up about government issues, and cause the fear of communism to increase. The US foreign policy on the 1950s was based on anti-communism beliefs and the spread of McCarthyism (Danzer et al. 620-621)

  3. Multiple events post World War II affected the Cold War. One of them being the Vietnam War. This is because it intensified the Cold War. Tensions also got worse because of the invention of atomic weapons.

  4. The United States & the Soviet Union were both affected by some of the events that occurred post WWII such as the Bay of Pigs & Vietnam War. For example the Bay of Pigs which was an attempted operation to save Cuban Exiles that rebelled against Fidel Castro’s Cuban Revolution. The operation ultimately failed and cost the U.S. 53 million dollars in food and medical supplies as ransom to free the captivated soldiers. The Vietnam War cost heavy losses for both the United States and Soviet Union. The U.S. ended up raising their taxes & had lost hundreds of thousands of troops which weakened the military severely. The Soviet Union ended up losing their leader Nikita Khrushchev.

  5. The United states and the Soviet Union were affected by events after WW2 like the Korean War that affected the Cold War. The Korean war was were the North part of Korean had become a Communist area because the Soviet Union had occupied it. The South of Korea was a democracy and the U.S occupied that area. Korea was suppose to eventually because one country again but the Soviets wanted Korea to be Communist and the U.S wanted it to be democratic. So North Korea began to invade South Korea. The U.S and United Nations then send troops to help South Korea. Then China got involved and sent troops to help North Korea. Eventually Korea was still split in to North Korea and South Korea. Both the U.S and the soviets had many losses and it got them nowhere. This on going fight that the U.S and the Soviets had led to the Cold War and them fighting even more.

  6. Both the United States and the Soviet union were immensely affected by the aftermath of World War II with some of these including the Vietnam War and McCarthyism. This was all in regards to how the cold war was handled between sides. McCarthy accused those who supported communism and the communist party while people were struggling and losing jobs and fellow friends from many false accusations. According to him the blame was aimed towards the highest levels of government for these issues and the rising fear of communism continued. In comparison, the Vietnam War cost thousands and thousands of lives and caused a raise in taxes. Also the loss of their leader weakened their military troops significantly and the creation of an atomic weapon changed the war effort completely.

  7. The United states and the Soviet Union were were each others biggest threats. The soviet union was spreading communism throughout Europe and Asia. This spread caused a great fear in the US. President Truman created the Truman Doctrine which was a foreign policy that counteracted the spread of Soviet Union communism during the Cold War. The Doctrine also led to the formation of NATO, a military alliance that still exists today. President Truman helped contain the communist uprisings in Greece and Turkey. Truman and Congress gave financial aid to support the economies and militaries of both Greece and Turkey. Britain asked for the United States to take over its role in supporting the royalist Greek government. With the support of Republicans who controlled Congress the US sent $400 million in American money to the region. They wanted to end Greek revolt. In 1952, both Greece and Turkey joined NATO, a military alliance, to guarantee their stability.

  8. During the cold war, US and USSR had tensions rising continuously. Americans during this time feared communism greatly. Anyone associated with communism or socialism will be captured then expelled. McCarthyism is a major factor of the red scare during the Cold War. It describes a time period where American institutions accuse people of treason often and create public fear of communist. Joseph McCarthy, a US senator, scares the Americans by investigating people publicly. He creates humors about his dreadful power. He kept on charging American celebrities for involvement in communist activities. Those people accused are shamed publicly and then purged from their career field. Not only does it investigates cases of treason, it also makes common Americans fear USSR. No one wants to get into any form of association with communist countries. Indeed, it decreases the connection between the two nations. This activity also triggered common investigation of USSR spies. Therefore it increases the hatred tension between two nations.
